Resumo

This article aims at brooding over the plurality and diversity which make up the Japanese-Canadian hyphenated experience by analysing the totally different perspectives of three generations of Japanese-Canadian women. It has also the purpose of investigating in what manner the appropriation of the past can be empowering for the racialised female subject as the process of identity construction takes place in diaspora, as well as what alternatives are left for the diasporic female subject. The main contribution of this article lies in its attempt to relate language, culture, gender, race, identity construction, hyphenated experience and future avenues in diaspora in order to offer food for thought with regard to how these matters are dealt with in that country nowadays.
